Werk It.

This post is especially for my leetle seester Heather.  I was telling her about the circiut workouts I was trying (off Pinterest) and she wanted to give them a go.  Here’s one I like:


Don’t let the title fool you.  The calories you burn greatly depend on your sex, weight and physical condition.  It took me a total of 54 minutes (5 minutes of stretching included) and I burned 345 calories.  Eh.  I don’t have a stationary bike, so instead I used my treadmill and walked at a 4.3 at a 10% incline.  Not bad, but for the time it took I was hoping for a better burn.

Sorry no food or recipes lately, the weather has been through unbelievable for this time of the year so meals have been quick and light.  Today’s forecast says 80 degrees, so I’ve got a park playdate for the kidlets and a powerwalk scheduled.  If you’re lucky enough to be in this part of the country – ENJOY!

This ‘little’ workout took me 30 minutes and wiped the floor with my ass!  I was doing well on the first round until the burpees, they slowed me down a bit.  By the 3rd round I was sweating, shaking and praying for it to be done!  Ok, I exaggerate a bit, but it was a really good circuit.  Try it, then tell me how you did.

P.S.  Last night’s Spaghetti Squash casserole was even better as lunch today!  Gonna make that again reeeeeeeal soon.

This is by far the hardest workout I have done all year.  I am exhausted and it’s only 11 am.  I have no idea how I’m going to get through the rest of the day!!

Now go ahead and try to tell me these aren’t absolutely freakin’ adorable!  That’s how these dance places get ya.  It’s a racket!!  These 2 outfits that she will wear on stage for a total of 3.5 minutes cost me $81.  And don’t forget tights and shoes – another $24.  A RACKET I TELL YA!  I’ve been wondering if there is a group that I can donate her costumes to – it just feels like such a waste……

Wait? Wheredja go?

Hiya peeps.

Sorry I’ve been MIA for the last week or so, it’s been crazy round these parts and I really haven’t had a lot of time to sit down at the computer. 

In case you didn’t know, my Mom has cancer so I’ve been spending a lot of time taking her to her appointments/treatments.  I think, for a while at least, I may only post once a week, so hang in there with me!

On today’s agenda though is fun stuff!  Know what this is?:

Yes, it’s a stair climber.  But not just any stair climber – it’s the Summit (duh, duh, dunnnnnn).  It’s like climbing up stairs 3 AT A TIMEOooh, it burns so good!  I’ve used this thing twice this week so far and I’ll probibly use it again today.  

Next week I’ll start the second P90X series, I don’t want to fall into the cardio whore routine like last summer – that wasn’t doing me any favors.

The plan is to take the rugrats to the pool after my workout and then we have the rest of the afternoon open.  

OH Hey!  Only 8 days till I can have peanut butter and nuts again!  This year has been really, really, really, really, really, really hard.  Really.  No kidding.

I joined a gym. Well, I joined our local Y.


I went to Zumba with the BFF last week and we also went to her son’s pool party there and I was sold. I know, you’re thinking ‘so what?”. Weeeeellllll…

I HATE the gym (bold for em-PHAS-is). I’ve hated it forever. I like to workout in my PJs. I like that I know the people at kickboxing – if not by name then at least by face. I’m SUPER-DUPER cheap and didn’t want to pay the monthly fee.

BUT, (or BUTT if you will)….

I figured each Zumba class was $10. If I did 4-5 classes a month plus the use of the pool with the rugrats, not to mention Cycling, Body Pump and the free childcare- WELL HELL-that would totally be worth it! Plus, we get a nice discount because hubbs is a cop!

Which brings me to the gym. BFF called me and asked if I’d like to go on a gym date with her. I already lifted today, but went anyway just to get outta the house without the kids.

 (I’d actually taken them swimming there this morning. Gettin’ my $$ worth.  Dolla dolla bills ya’ll!).

The place was mostly empty and we did back and shoulders on the extremely nice and visibly new equipment. Then we hit the sauna.

When I was in high school and didn’t know a THING about nutrition (I thought a chicken caesar salad qualified as diet food), my favorite meal was the fettucine alfredo at Olive Garden.   As I’ve gotten older and my tastes have matured a bit, I have to admit – I still freakin love it!  What?!  You want me to lie?   That shit is the bomb! 

But, alas, I can not, will not and have not eaten this creamy dish of salty, cheesy goodness since high school.  I honestly don’t think my 30-something body could handle it!  Check out the stats (from the OG website):

  1220 Cals / 75 Fat / 47 Sat. Fat / 1350 Sodium / 99 Carbs

Which brings me to a fantastic, healthy version from Laurie at Red Head Recipes – check her out on the blogroll.

My dish included Shiritaki noodles, mushrooms, grilled red pepper, red onion, and spinach.  I’ll be very honest here.  This is NOT alfredo, but as a healthy substitute it KICKS ASS!

  • Milk, 1%, 0.25 cup
  • Cauliflower, frozen, cooked, 1 cup
  • Garlic, 1 tsp 
  • Mushrooms, fresh, 0.50 cup, pieces or slices
  • Onions, raw, 1 tbsp chopped 
  • Spinach, fresh, 0.50 cup
  • Laughing Cow Light Creamy Swiss Original Cheese (Serving = 1 wedge)
  • Shiritaki Noodles, 8 oz – rinsed and drained 
  • *Pepper, Roasted Red, Mt. Olive (1/4 pepper = 30g)

Microwave the cauliflower (if you have a magic bullet – do it right in the cup).  Toss in the Laughing Cow cheese wedge, garlic (S&P Optional) and blend adding milk to thin it out as you go. 

 Set aside.  In a small pan coated with cooking spray, saute the onion and mushrooms until soft.  Toss in the red pepper and spinach until wilted.  Finally throw the noodles in the pan and heat through.  Plate the noodles and veg and top with the cauliflower ‘alfredo’.

This stuff is fantastic!  Seriously, give it a try!!

In other news……guess what I did last night….




I thought it would be fun, but that was insane!  The most fun 60 minutes of exercise I’ve ever done!  And to top it off I burned 400 calories!  That was a big shocker!  I can’t wait to go again – Big Thanks to the BFF for taking me!

Quick recap on my workouts from the last few days:

Wednesday – Kickboxing.  Felt awesome, had a good workout.

(Legs were pretty tired)

Thursday – P90X Legs and Back.  Used heavier weights and I did 24 (out of 86) unassisted pullups/chinups.

Friday – Insanity Max Plyometric video.  I was staring the clock down willing it to move faster.

(Afraid to sit down for fear my legs would no longer function)

Saturday Rest. BFF called and wanted to know if I wanted to do an Insanity video.  WHAT?  Are you nuts?  I can BARELY move!  Ok, sure – see you in 15.

(The lower back pain has now cancelled out the leg pain)

I’m falling apart at the seams I tell ya!

I did get some cooking done yesterday too.  After BFF left, I made some Italian White Bean & Turkey Soup:

adapted from Sunday Night Dinner

  • Poultry seasoning, 1 tbsp 
  • Rosemary, dried, 1 tsp 
  • Thyme, ground, 1 tsp 
  • Garlic, 4 cloves
  • Onions, raw, 1 medium (2-1/2″ dia) 
  • Spinach, fresh, 1 package (10 oz) 
  • Ground Turkey – 99% fat free, 20 oz 
  • Chicken Broth – College Inn Light & Fat Free, 4 cup 
  • beans kidney white cannellini PROGRESSO 15oz
  • Cooking Spray

1) In a medium stock pot brown ground turkey with the cooking spray, season with a poultry seasoning ( and S&P if you like), break into small pieces and brown for 3-4 minutes. Drain excess fat, if necessary. Add garlic and onions and sauté for 4-5 minutes, until onions are soft.

2) Add cannellini beans, thyme, rosemary and chicken stock. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Mix in chopped spinach and simmer 5 more minutes. Adjust seasonings to taste.

This recipe makes about 10 cups.  I figured the stats in 1 cup servings, but really, I never eat just 1 cup!

I separated it into 2 large tupperware bowls and froze one.  BTW, did you know if you lay a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the soup before you put the cover on, it will keep the soup from becoming freezer burned?  Try it!

Next up was Banana Muffins!  The rotten bananas on the counter were about to revolt.

With multiple accoutrements:

Preheat your oven to 350.  Mix the flour, soda and salt in one bowl.  Cream together the butter, applesauce and brown sugar.  Mix the egg whites and banana together really well and pour that into the butter/sugar mixture.  Stir that well and then pour the wet ingredients into the dry.  [*Sorry about all the dirty bowls!*]  Prepare your muffin tin and scoop about a 1/4 cup into each well. 

Top with whatever your little heart desires.  My heart screamed WALNUTS!  Peyton and Reese wanted chocolate and peanut butter chips – go figure.  Stats are for the muffins without any add-ins.

Bake them about 15-18 minutes.

  • Total Carbs: 37.0 g

Now I could’ve messed with these and cut out more fat, added more protein, lower sugar etc., but sometimes you just want a damn muffin, so I make no apologies for these.  They’re damn good.  Not to sweet and perfectly moist.

Lastly I roasted an eggplant that I tossed in some Maple Grove Farms Fat Free Balsamic vinaigrette.  This particular brand doesn’t have any HFCS, where as my other favorite brand did 😦 . 

They kinda look like potatoes huh?

Anyway, I served these mixed with some (jarred) fire roasted red peppers and feta and my Chicken Italiano.  <—-You’re gonna have to click on the link to see it cause I didn’t get a picture.

So there ya go, now you’re up to date.  Gotta go bang out some P90X Chest, Shoulders and Triceps followed by Ab Ripper.

To summarize: Snow, Eggs, Seeds & Paint.


I’m sure you’ve noticed the slight change of direction this blog has taken over the last couple of months.  I hope you don’t mind.  Being trapped in the house makes for boring workouts.  Also, it forces me to actually look at the house.  The more I look, the more I want to change (read: fix).

And, having borderline OCD, when I start something – like spring cleaning or a craft project – it tends to consume me.

So today it is snowing.  Again.

The kids haven’t really been able to enjoy the snow so much because of lingering colds, but today everyone seems good…fingers crossed. 

Oh, just so you know, Officer M decided on White Bean Chicken Chili the other day.  While that was simmering away, I made  Egg, Spinach & Cheese Bake.  Easy Peasy.

8 egg whites

1/2 c milk (I used 1%)

10 oz pkg frozen Spinach (thaw and drain)

1/2 c Sargento Reduced Fat 4 Cheese Italian Blend (or Cheddar)


Onion Powder (real onion would be better)

Garlic Powder

Yeah, so mix everything together, pour into a prepared 8×8 pan and bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes.   Bacon bits would rock this.  Ahhh, hindesight.

  • Total Fat: 2.8 g
  • Cholesterol: 6.5 mg

We also made the bird seed feeders:

Here’s what we used:

3/4c Ap Flour

1/2c Water

1/4c Light Corn Syrup

Mix these well. 

Then we added in whatever we had on hand, which was:

Flax Seed

Walnuts & Almonds (ground up a bit)



Sorry no measurements on those.  Just keep adding until you get a pretty dry mixture. 

Spray a baking sheet and cookie cutters with non-stick spray and stuff in the mixture:

Using a straw, poke a hole through the feeder so you can add a string:

Now if you are a patient person (which I am NOT), you can leave these out to dry overnight.  I baked them at 170 degrees for 1.5 hours, flipping them once.  If you bake them, make sure to remove your cutters and straws first!  No-I don’t think you are stupid, but we all have those days 😉

Fun stuff.  We pakaged up a couple as gifts and hung one out on the deck.  Which the dog promptly ate.  I’m not sure what all that flax is gonna do to her……

In between the bird seed and cooking I managed to finish painting the bedroom!!  Yay!!  Ugly chailrail GONE!  Soothing grayish-blue color IN!!

Here is my dilemma though.

I was gonna paint the armoir and headboard Antique White, but the more I look at the wood next to the new paint, the more unsure I am:

So last night I convinced Officer M we needed to bite the bullet and get new dressers.  I picked out these from Raymour and Flanigan:

These are done in a Cherry Finish.

So I’m thinking if we get these new dressers, I will paint the headboard and armoir. 

Taking votes here, what do you think?  Seriously, I need some input!!

Today’s title elude’s me.

HA!  Like my $10 word?  Elude.  I actually had to look it up to make sure that it really meant what I thought it meant.  Good thing too, I almost used ALLUDE!  Now that I’m telling you this, I hope you don’t think less of me 😉

So anyway.

I’m in a rut with chicken.

I usually just cook it up in my Turbo Cooker with some salt free spices and call it a day.  Officer M isn’t big fan of this method.  I could make some White Bean Chicken Chili and cornbread.  Or a casserole.  There’s always pot pie.  I may have to hit up some of my favorite recipe sites for inspiration….. I’ll let you know what I come up with, I know you’ll be waiting on pins and needles!

I got quite a bit accomplished yesterday in regards to my numerous projects.  The secret one is like 5 minutes from finished – I just have to get to Home Depot!  Not an easy task given the weather recently:

The driveway is a solid sheet of ice.

I got the bedroom primed and will be painting it today.  The plan is to have the walls done and the headboard started by Friday.

I also finished a couple of small items:

♣This lovely piece of art is actually made of toilet paper rolls, glued together and sprayed with a metallic paint.  It’s in my bathroom.  Thought that was fitting…

♠I’ve seen these wreaths a lot lately.  I think the original version was by Pottery Barn for $$$.  Whatev.  Mine cost me like 52¢ -suck on that P.B.!

Yesterday was also P90X Arms and Shoulders.  This is my 3rd time around with the program (well, 2 1/2 – I kinda made up my own version last time round), so this time I’m trying to lift heavy.  I mainly used 20’s and 25’s with a few 15lb-ers thrown in when I got tired.  Looking at my tracking sheet for the last 3 weeks, I realized I should’ve started heavier from the get-go.  Some exercises went from 20 reps with a 15lb weight to 8 with a 25!  I feel it today and that makes me happy 🙂

I should go get my butt in gear.  Aside from painting, I promised Peyton & Reese we’d make bird seed feeders (show ya that later) and the house needs a thorough dusting.  Seriously.  It’s like, eeeeeewww.

I can’t STOP!

It all started with this:

This homely, piece of crap coat rack.  We’ve hated this thing FOR-EV-ER.  So I got the idea to purty it up:

For a little leftover paint and $4 in knobs – not too shabby.  Or maybe Shabby Chic?

Then I got the painting bug.  And I needed to do the living room:



A little paint and some new accessories (that I already had) and voila!  Not so vanilla anymore!

And that metal scroll-y chandelier-y looking thingy that was over the fireplace?  That got a fresh new look and a nice new home:

It’s now hanging over Miss P’s bed.  Just gives her even more reason to believe she really is a princess….

I didn’t forget about Bugga.  I made him a growth chart outta some leftover MDF from my secret project (more on that very soon):

I have some cars ready to be glued onto this, but I have a feeling Bugga would try to pry them off.  He likes to put this on the floor and use it as a race track.

There are some other things going on too, but I need to make some progress before I post them.  I will however show you the FAN-FREAKIN-TASTC headboard my Dad and I found at the flea market for $5!!!!!

I L♥ve, L♥ve, L♥VE this thing!   

I really wanted to make an upholstered headboard for the bedroom, then I saw this beauty!  How could I pass it up for $5????   So I dragged Ivy to the fabric store with me yesterday afternoon and now I have a PLAN – mwahahaha!!!!! 


I have been keeping up with my workouts in case you were wondering.  Not doing 2-a-days frees up some time.  The only thing that sucks about doing P90X as my primary workout is that my cardio is taking a nosedive. 

I know, I know.  I’ve read all the articles about how cardio is bottom of the pyramid for weight maintenance/loss, but kickboxing and the E got hard!  I haven’t set foot on the treadmill at all this year either…..

Speaking of kickboxing.

Either I’m hardcore – or I bruise like a week old pear:

So today’s agenda is a double-P90x this am and Kickboxing tonight.  I skipped Chest & Back yesterday to go to the fabric store.  Gotta say, the fabric store was WAYYY more fun!

Right now I’m fueling up with this:

3 egg whites, La Tortilla Factory wrap, 1 oz deli turkey and Chipotle Laughing Cow Wedge.  TONS of protein.

I gotta get my workout done early cuz my Momma’s coming over.  She asked me to help her with some weight training (that and she wants to use my E and treadmill).

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know Officer M studied for the Sergeant’s exam for like 6 months and finally took the damn thing in October.  Well, the results came in on Saturday.

Officer M was the ONE AND ONLY person to pass the test!!!!!
